    Mixed RF-VLC Relaying Systems for Interference-Sensitive Mobile Applications

    Due to their Radio-Frequency (RF) immunity, Visible Light Communications (VLC) pose as a promising technology for interference sensitive applications such as medical data networks. In this paper, we investigate mixed RF-VLC relaying systems especially suited for this type of applications that support mobility. In this system setup, the end-user, who is assumed to be on a vehicle that is in dynamic movement, is served by an indoor VLC system, while the outdoor data traffic is conveyed through multiple backhaul RF links. Furthermore, it is assumed that a single backhaul RF link is activated by the mobile relay and due to feedback delay, the RF link activation is based on outdated channel state information (CSI). The performance of this system is analyzed in terms of outage probability and bit error rate (BER), and novel closed form analytical expressions are provided. Furthermore, the analysis is extended for the case where the average SNR over the RF links and/or LED optical power is high, and approximate analytical expressions are derived which determine performance floors. Numerical results are provided which demonstrate that the utilization of multiple RF backhaul links can significantly improve overall RF-VLC system performance when outage/BER floors are avoided. This calls upon joint design of both subsystems. Additionally, the outdated CSI exploited for active RF selection can significantly degrade the quality of system performance.Comment: Published in IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technolog

    Efecto del injerto en las propiedades antioxidantes del tomate (Solanum lycopersicum L.)

    The use of grafted plants in vegetable crop production is now being expanded greatly. However, few data are available on the nutritional composition of grafted vegetables with emphasis on antioxidant properties. Therefore, the major objective of this study was to evaluate antioxidant components of tomatoes influenced by grafting technique. The tomato plants were grown in a greenhouse located at Kriz˘evci, Croatia. The cultivars ‘Efialto’, ‘Heman’, and ‘Maxifort’ were used as rootstocks, while ‘Tamaris’ was used as scion. Grafting resulted in increase of number of marketable fruits per plant by 30%. Content of total vitamin C and total phenolics significantly decreased after grafting. The concentration of total extractable phenolics in tomatoes ranged from 287.1 to 977.4 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE) kg–1 fresh weight, whereas lycopene content ranged from 11.44 to 60.99 mg kg–1 fresh weight. Antioxidant activities determined by 1,1-diphenyl-2 picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method of grafts were significantly different compared to their respective rootstocks. The overall results showed that tomato grafting on suitable rootstocks has positive effects on the cultivation performance, but decreases nutritional quality of tomatoes. En la producción de cultivos hortícolas se está expandiendo actualmente de forma considerable el uso de plantas injertadas. Sin embargo, hay pocos datos disponibles sobre la composición nutricional de las hortícolas injertadas, especialmente sobre sus propiedades antioxidantes. El principal objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar los componentes antioxidantes de tomates influenciados por la técnica de injerto. Se cultivaron plantas de tomate en un invernadero de Kriz˘evcii, Croacia. Se utilizaron como portainjertos los cultivares ‘Efialto’, ‘Heman’, y ‘Maxifort’, mientras que ‘Tamaris’ fue utilizado como injerto. El resultado del injerto fue un aumento del 30% en el número de frutos comerciales por planta, mientras que el contenido de vitamina C y de fenoles totales disminuyó significativamente. La concentración del total de fenoles extraíbles en los tomates varió entre 287,1 y 977,4 mg de equivalentes de ácido gálico (GAE) por kilo sobre la base de peso fresco, mientras que el contenido de licopeno varió desde 11,44 hasta 60,99 mg kg–1 de peso fresco. Las actividades antioxidantes determinadas por el método DPPH (2,2-difenil-1-picrilhidrazilo) de los injertos fueron significativamente diferentes respecto de sus respectivos patrones. Los resultados globales muestran que el injerto de tomate sobre patrones adecuados tiene efectos positivos sobre el rendimiento de cultivo, pero la calidad nutricional de los frutos disminuye

    Multi-user video streaming using unequal error protection network coding in wireless networks

    In this paper, we investigate a multi-user video streaming system applying unequal error protection (UEP) network coding (NC) for simultaneous real-time exchange of scalable video streams among multiple users. We focus on a simple wireless scenario where users exchange encoded data packets over a common central network node (e.g., a base station or an access point) that aims to capture the fundamental system behaviour. Our goal is to present analytical tools that provide both the decoding probability analysis and the expected delay guarantees for different importance layers of scalable video streams. Using the proposed tools, we offer a simple framework for design and analysis of UEP NC based multi-user video streaming systems and provide examples of system design for video conferencing scenario in broadband wireless cellular networks

    Distributed intelligent illumination control in the context of probabilistic graphical models

    Lighting systems based on light-emitting diodes (LEDs) possess many benefits over their incandescent counterparts including longer lifespans, lower energy costs, better quality of light and no toxic elements, all without sacrificing consumer satisfaction. Their lifespan is not affected by switching frequency allowing for better illumination control and system efficiency. In this paper, we present a fully distributed energy-saving illumination dimming control strategy for the system of a lighting network which consists of a group of LEDs and user-Associated devices. In order to solve the optimization problem, we are using a distributed approach that utilizes factor graphs and the belief propagation algorithm. Using probabilistic graphical models to represent and solve the system model provides for a natural description of the problem structure, where user devices and LED controllers exchange data via line-of-sight communication

    The implicit objective of the biennial "international - Traveling Workshop on Interactions between Sparse models and Technology" (iTWIST) is to foster collaboration between international scientific teams by disseminating ideas through both specific oral/poster presentations and free discussions. For its second edition, the iTWIST workshop took place in the medieval and picturesque town of Namur in Belgium, from Wednesday August 27th till Friday August 29th, 2014.     Human sit-to-stand transfer modeling towards intuitive and biologically-inspired robot assistance

Sit-to-stand (STS) transfers are a common human task which involves complex sensorimotor processes to control the highly nonlinear musculoskeletal system. In this paper, typical unassisted and assisted human STS transfers are formulated as optimal feedback control problem that finds a compromise between task end-point accuracy, human balance, energy consumption, smoothness of motion and control and takes further human biomechanical control constraints into account. Differential dynamic programming is employed, which allows taking the full, nonlinear human dynamics into consideration. The biomechanical dynamics of the human is modeled by a six link rigid body including leg, trunk and arm segments. Accuracy of the proposed modelling approach is evaluated for different human healthy and patient/elderly subjects by comparing simulations and experimentally collected data. Acceptable model accuracy is achieved with a generic set of constant weights that prioritize the different criteria. Finally, the proposed STS model is used to determine optimal assistive strategies suitable for either a person with specific body segment weakness or a more general weakness. These strategies are implemented on a robotic mobility assistant and are intensively evaluated by 33 elderlies, mostly not able to perform unassisted STS transfers. The validation results show a promising STS transfer success rate and overall user satisfaction

    Optimized cross-layer forward error correction coding for H.264 AVC video transmission over wireless channels

    Forward error correction (FEC) codes that can provide unequal error protection (UEP) have been used recently for video transmission over wireless channels. These video transmission schemes may also benefit from the use of FEC codes both at the application layer (AL) and the physical layer (PL). However, the interaction and optimal setup of UEP FEC codes at the AL and the PL have not been previously investigated. In this paper, we study the cross-layer design of FEC codes at both layers for H.264 video transmission over wireless channels. In our scheme, UEP Luby transform codes are employed at the AL and rate-compatible punctured convolutional codes at the PL. In the proposed scheme, video slices are first prioritized based on their contribution to video quality. Next, we investigate the four combinations of cross-layer FEC schemes at both layers and concurrently optimize their parameters to minimize the video distortion and maximize the peak signal-to-noise ratio. We evaluate the performance of these schemes on four test H.264 video streams and show the superiority of optimized cross-layer FEC design.Peer reviewedElectrical and Computer Engineerin
